Thank you, Winston, for sharing this compelling missive from Mr. Charrington, and please relay my congratulations and warm regards for his wisdom, fortitude, and bravery in the face of mounting pressures to comply.

The glass paperweight sounds intriguing, although I’d caution you and Julia against renting a room from him ;-)

Thanks Margaret for your kind words and for your warning. I am afraid I've been renting a room from Mr. Charrington (what depth of insight you must have to even perceive such a thing!) as he seems to me to be one of the few people I can trust these days. I'm certain he wouldn't do us any harm.

One day I'll have to tell you about a certain O'Brian - I think he could be the key to getting us all out of this mess. I think he's one of us. My faith in humanity is slowly being restored :-)

🤣🤣🤣

Oh yes, O’Brien … I know the man. He once shared an advance copy of the 10th edition of the Newspeak Dictionary with me. Although perhaps I shouldn’t discuss that publicly.

Winston this letter was wonderful. It feels as I wrote it myself.

I only recently found your substack and subscribed. Thanks to Margaret Anne Alice for opening this door!

This feels almost like a letter I could have written as it encapsulates so many of my views. Is Mr. Chariington a real person, I would love to use this content( modified of course) to prepare a year-end letter to my clients. Would you approve? I will be happy to give credit to you and your substack to help get the message? Thank again.

Hi Dennis. Would love for you to use this letter to inform your clients - would also love for you to point them to my substack! Mr Charrington is a character from 1984 of course, but behind the character is a real friend who wrote this to me - a 'rant' he said, that had to be said.

Oh my! 1984, that is funny. I read the book many years ago but recently told my wife to purchase a copy and read it as we are living through it. I think I need to read it again.

So many wonderful books to read. So little time. A few years ago I had a personal goal to read 52 books in a year. I did it twice (and my life improved). Since then I have tracked each year and my total has dropped too low. You have motivated me. I think I'll try to make this a goal for 2022 to hit the 52 number again.

Regards. Best wishes for substack success!

Yes! Too many good books, too little time. I read slowly, so 52 in a year wouldn't be possible given the technical reading I need to do for my day job. Anyway, if you can, that's wonderful - go for it!
